This week we complete the first of the 39 books that make up the Old Testament. Genesis closes with Jacob's family of 70 moving to Egypt. But Exodus begins some 350 years later when God's people were no longer welcome, but had indeed grown to such a large nation that the Egyptian Pharoah felt threatened and ruthlessly clammped down on them, oppressing them as slaves of his own kingdom.
The first 20 chapters of Exodus read like an exciting novel as it follows the Isrealites' flight from Egypt. In contrast to Genesis's large cast of characters, Exodus focuses on one main character, Moses. After a brief compressed explanation of three and a half centuries, chapters 3 - 40 of Exodus are devoted to the events of a single year.
