The Countdown Begins!!! 17 days left!! Are you on target? PLEASE RSVP!

Hi to all!

We are quickly approaching Reformation Day, Oct 27, 2014.

For those who began our "Read the Bible in a Year" challenge on Reformation 2013, this date will mark the official target.   For those who began the "Read the New Testament in 88 Days" when we hit August , this date again will mark the official target.

So, how's your journey been??

I must say, personally, I have enjoyed the New Testament immensely. Like many of you, I imagine, the New Testament scriptures and stories are most familiar to me.  The verses I have memorized thru the years in words from the old King James Version, the NRSV, and the NIV still ring solidly and I treasure them.    But I have enjoyed the Message Version this time, much more than I thought I would.

I chose to listen to most of the readings on a CD set I purchased and have been playing in my car as I travel each day.  And,. . . after Pastor Wray's introduction to the Gospels & Acts at that Connection Point, I was quickly noticing which of the Gospels had the details of the various stories of Jesus that are in my head (and heart)  -- and what new - unfamiliar details were included.  I would love to go back now, when we are completely finished and do a "synoptic" study of the four gospels together.

Then, when Romans began, I felt like Paul was talking directly to me -- to us.  It has been a very rewarding journey for me.

On Sunday, Oct 27, we will be acknowledging those who have completed either the entire Bible or the New Testament.  I will have coins for both circumstances to complete the set.  BUT  I need to know who is on target so I am sure to have enough coins!!

Please send me an email  - janlocascio@earthlink.net
-ASAP to let me know just that.
Are you on target to complete
the entire Bible by Oct 27?
The New Testament?
Can't wait to hear from you all!!

blessings and peace,
jan<><

Martin Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans
This translation was made by Bro. Andrew Thornton, OSB, for the Saint Anselm College Humanities Program. (c)1983 by Saint Anselm Abbey. Please direct any comments or suggestions to: Rev. Robert E. Smith, Walther Library, Concordia Theological Seminary

Preface

This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel. It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes.

Therefore I want to carry out my service and, with this preface, provide an introduction to the letter, insofar as God gives me the ability, so that every one can gain the fullest possible understanding of it. Up to now it has been darkened by glosses and by many a useless comment, but it is in itself a bright light, almost bright enough to illumine the entire Scripture.

Be sure to pick up a guide!!

Greetings!

Those of you who missed the
Tuesday Connection Point
WILL definitely want to pick up a copy of
Pastor Wray's  handouts!

In one, he has outlined the "characteristics" of each of the Gospels and the book of Acts.  Viewing these characteristics, especially in advance of reading those books,  will help to pick out those things that make each Gospel unique.  It is an excellent resource for those of us "non-scholars" who might otherwise miss some important distinctions. A second handout provides a listing of several other books for those wanting additional resources.

Copies are available on the table at the rear of the sanctuary or thru the church office.

Our next Connection Point will be
Tuesday, September 17th.
This is timed to coincide with our completion of the Gospels and Acts and the beginning of the letters of Paul with the book of Romans.
This should be another insightful evening as we will learn about Paul's communications with and influence on the early churches.

Remember, your questions are WELCOMED!!

Sunday, August 4, 2013

Week 41 -- August 4 - 10

So, are you enjoying the New Testament??  Jesus' teachings are not always easy, but his love and grace are present at all times for those who listen and respond to God's kingdom.  As you read The Message version, do you also "hear" the familiar scriptures in the more typical versions -- NRSV, NIV, even King James??  What version speaks most to you now?

          Don't forget --  Tuesday, August 6
                     Connection Point

Thursday, August 1  --  Matthew 1-4

Friday, August 2  --  Matthew  5-7

Saturday, August 3  --  Matthew 8-9

Week 40 -- July 28 - August 3

This week we complete our reading plan's scheduled Old Testament readings and begin the New Testament readings.

For those who are "up to date", (and there are quite a few of you!),  congratulations!!

For those who are "a little behind",  I encourage you to pick up on Thursday as we begin the New Testament and the book of Matthew.  Stay current in the New Testament readings and then go back to pick up the remaining Old Testament readings every chance you get.

If you are still hoping to complete the "Bible in a Year" goal, take a few minutes to determine how much extra reading you'll need to do to get caught up while you are staying current in the New Testament scheduled readings.

Some folks had given up on the challenge -- but most are planning  to jump back in to "Read the New Testament in 88 days!"

And some who had not begun the year-long challenge have, instead, set the goal to "Read the New Testament in 88 days."

And so, the journey continues.  Keep in mind that you are part of a family of faith that continues to grow as we connect with God's word.  We journey together!

Week 31 - May 26 - June1

Continuing from last week, all material printed in red italics below is directly from enterthebible.org.  This web site is created by Luther Seminary and is a wonderful source of additional information as we read.

These introductions may help to put the context in place for your day's assigned reading.  Enjoy!!

The Call of Cyrus (Isaiah 44:23-45:19)Cyrus, the Persian ruler, has been chosen by God to free the people. Cyrus is God's "shepherd," even God's "anointed," sent to do God's saving work.

Idols Cannot Save; Babylon Cannot Stand (Isaiah 45:20-48:22)The judgment of the idols and of Babylon is now in progress. Israel is called to turn from its own obstinacy and embrace God's offer of salvation.

Sunday,  Isaiah 45-47

A Light to the Nations (Isaiah 49:1-55:13)God calls the servant to be a light to the nations and calls Israel to listen to God's teachings and to prepare for the return to Jerusalem.
A. The Call of the Servant (Isaiah 49:1-50:3)The servant reports being called by God in language similar to the call of a prophet. The servant is commissioned as a light to the nations that God's salvation might reach to the ends of the earth. God promises to bring home exiles from all directions.
B. To Listen and to Teach (Isaiah 50:4-51:8)The servant is confidant of God's vindication despite being struck and insulted for his fidelity to God's call. The people are called to listen to God and not to fear the reproach of others.

Monday,  Isaiah 48-50

B. To Listen and to Teach (Isaiah 50:4-51:8)The servant is confidant of God's vindication despite being struck and insulted for his fidelity to God's call. The people are called to listen to God and not to fear the reproach of others.
C. Awake, Awake (Isaiah 51:9-52:12)Israel calls upon God to "awake" and to help them, but God calls Israel to awake and put on strength for the journey out of Babylon.
D. The Suffering Servant (Isaiah 52:13-53:12)The servant is introduced as "a man of suffering"; surprisingly, he suffers not for his own iniquity but for the sake of others. He will be honored by God because he "bore the sin of many."

Tuesday, Isaiah 51-53

Life Made New (Isaiah 54:1-55:13)God calls Israel to sing for joy and to enjoy God's own feast, eating at last "what is good." God's word will do its work as surely as the rain and snow water the earth.
IV. Book 3 (Isaiah 56:1-66:24)The third portion of Isaiah contains messages of hope and warning to the people of God back in Jerusalem following the release from captivity in Babylon (538 B.C.E.).
1. Maintain Justice (Isaiah 56:1-59:21)Through the prophet, God invites all to enter into God's salvation, while calling on Israel to turn from idolatry and inauthentic worship, to share their food with the hungry, and to repent of their oppression of others and their revolt against God.

Wednesday, Isaiah 54-57

Your Light Has Come (Isaiah 60:1-62:12)These central chapters of the third part of Isaiah are very similar to Book 2 (Second Isaiah). God promises renewal and restoration of Israel, liberty to the captives, and comfort for those who mourn.
Thursday, Isaiah 58-60

Announcing Vindication (Isaiah 63:1-66:24)The people hear God's accusation and appeal for divine mercy. God promises again to make things new and to nourish Israel like a nursing mother.
Friday, Isaiah 61-64

Saturday, Isaiah 65-66

Week 30 May 19 - 25

For the book of Isaiah, our recommended site,  Enterthebible.org, from Luther Seminary, has some great introductory information with each chapter or section of Isaiah.  You may find this helpful, in much the same way that the introductions help us with the scripture readings in worship.  All the italics printed information (also in red) below is directly taken from enterthebible.org.  You might like to check out the site further by clicking here.

The Isaiah "Apocalypse" (Isaiah 24:1-27:13)
These chapters contain themes and images typical of later apocalyptic literature. The texts foresee the desolation of the whole earth, but also God's feast for all peoples on the holy mountain, where God "will swallow up death forever." Judah sings and looks forward to God's ultimate deliverance.

Sunday, May 19  -  Isaiah 26-28

Oracles regarding Judah and Israel (Isaiah 28:1-33:24)The prophet continues to announce God's judgment on the corrupt leaders and practices of Israel and Judah. God's children are seen as rebellious because they rely on foreign nations and military power rather than on God; nevertheless, God holds out a firm promise of deliverance that closes the section.
Monday, May 20  -  Isaiah 29-31

Transition (Isaiah 34:1-39:8)This section of the book includes material that looks back to the period of Book 1 and anticipates the time of Book 2.

The Time to Come: Judgment and Renewal (Isaiah 34:1-35:10)Together, the two chapters announce that God's coming transformation will involve both total judgment of the wicked and final salvation for the redeemed. Chapter 35 includes themes that anticipate the message of Second Isaiah.
Tuesday, May 21  -  Isaiah 32-34

Looking Back, Looking Ahead (Isaiah 36:1-39:8)These chapters provide an historical appendix, using material from 2 Kings 18:13-20:19, that reviews the time during which Isaiah of Jerusalem prophesied and looks forward to the Babylonian era, providing the background for the prophecy of Isaiah of Babylon or Second Isaiah.
Wednesday, May 22  -  Isaiah 35-37

Book 2 (Isaiah 40:1-55:13)The second major segment of the book contains messages of comfort and encouragement to the exilic community in Babylon (sixth-century B.C.E.) by an unknown prophet, sometimes called Second Isaiah or Isaiah of Babylon.
Comfort My People (Isaiah 40:1-31)Voices call, valleys are lifted up, good news is announced: God is coming to comfort and rescue the exiles in Babylonian captivity. No power can claim divinity other than God.

Thursday, May 23  -  Isaiah 38-40

I Am About To Do a New Thing (Isaiah 41:1-48:22)These chapters announce the new exodus that God is about to accomplish for God's captive people. It will be like what God has done in the past, yet it will be totally new.
A. Summoning the Victor (Isaiah 41:1-29)

The idols of the nations, however seductive, are finally powerless. God, however, will work through "a victor from the east"--Cyrus of Persia--to transform the political world and free God's people.
B. Introducing the Servant (Isaiah 42:1-12)Amid all the appeals to power, God introduces "my servant," who will not cry out, but who will bring a gentle justice to Israel and the nations.

Friday, May 24  -  Isaiah 41-42

C. A New Exodus (Isaiah 42:13-43:28)God promises to be with Israel in all times of trouble, to break down the bars of Babylonian captivity, and to bring God's people safely home through a desert that has been made fertile and welcoming.

D. God, Not Idols! (Isaiah 44:1-22)God, who formed Israel in the womb, promises continued care and deliverance, unlike the lifeless and useless idols that are seen to be a fraud.
E. The Call of Cyrus (Isaiah 44:23-45:19)Cyrus, the Persian ruler, has been chosen by God to free the people. Cyrus is God's "shepherd," even God's "anointed," sent to do God's saving work.

Saturday, May 25  -  Isaiah 43-44
